BRIDE PRICE IN AFRICA

The world is said to be advancing at a very fast pace but how come Africa seems to be living backward? They want young men to get married and settle down instead of sleeping with girls that they would end up not marrying. But my question is, how can these young men who do not earn so much be able to handle the cost of getting married when you fix the bride price at a moderately high amount and then you bring up a list of things that he MUST BUY for you to allow him marry your daughter as though it's a deity you want to appease with the very many things you are asking him to buy.

Honestly, I thing very many of the things guys are being asked to provide all in the name of wedding are very irrelevant and just too many.

Imagine, you will be asked to buy a generator set for your would be father-in-law, buy a carton of cigarette, buy a big box and fill it with brand new expensive clothes for the would be mother-in-law, buy a big bag of salt for the elderly women in the community, a keg of fresh palm wine, a pair of shoes for the eldest man in the family, School fees for the youngest child in the house, etc.

After a man with a less than average income has struggled to meet up with all of these requirement:
(1) Tell me why he will not ban his in-laws from coming to his home for a period.

(2) Tell me why he will not beat his wife for every little mistake she makes.

Africans should wake up and rise up. Some of these age long traditions really need to be abolished for people to feel free to live in the real 21st century life.
