Midnight At The Well Of Souls: A Brief Review

It's finally here!!! I've been a huge fan of science fiction for as long as I can remember and a fan of Jack Chalker since the early 80's (1980-81). This is volume one of the Well of Souls series and a little hard to find. Amazon had it for around $29.95, but I picked it up used at ThriftBooks.com for $3.45.

Chalker's stories are deep- they remind me of C.S. Lewis' space trilogy (Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra and That Hideous Strength)- and can be confusing, but they're well worth the read for any sci-fi and fantasy fan. As you can see the planet is set up like a honeycomb with each culture possessing varying levels of technology. The creatures that inhabit each hexagon are different and our hero, Nathan Brazil has to change form to travel between them. Brazil himself is an interesting character- the antithesis of the typical Buck Rogers/Captain Kirk type. He's a short Jewish guy with kinky black hair and a big nose. I'm not going to do a spoiler and give away any more of the story, but if you love sci-fi and/or fantasy stories, you'll love the Well of Souls series and will be missing out on what should be a classic up there with Harlan Ellison, Robert Heinlein and the rest!

Well, I'm off to have coffee and spend the rest of the afternoon getting reacquainted with Nathan, et.al..
