Bonsai pruning guidelines - Branch pruning

This is best done in bonsai when the tree is growing vigorously but spring or early summer is frequently the best time to prune branches.

Pruning branches will often be the practice that most determines the shape, look and size of your bonsai.

Some branch pruning guidelines:

  • Older, more established bonsai can be pruned more frequently and heavily than their younger counterparts.
  • In younger plants allow for the shoots to grow longer and thicker before pruning to encourage strength in the resultant branches.
  • In younger trees focus pruning efforts on the lower third trunk branches.
  • Clean cuts heal more rapidly, always use sharp tools and never hack away at branches.
  • Aim for alternating branches to balance the resultant shape and weight of the tree.
  • When removing an entire branch use the right tools and cut it of as close to the trunk as possible to enable complete healing.
  • Cuts within the branch should be just above the bud and the bud that remains should face in the desired direction.
