FEEDING ON TRUTH

Feeding is an important characteristic of every living thing. According to Encarta Dictionary, ‘to feed’ means to give food to somebody; to give something as food to a person; to take regular food or nourishment as a person.' Sustenance of human body comes from eating right foods in right quantities. “What you ingest actually becomes a part of the structure of your body. That is why proper nutrition is very important” (Agu, 2002). If one fills one’s body system with cancer-producing chemicals in the name of food then at an opportune moment one begins to face the torment of cancer except if God graciously intervenes. If a person is fond of eating animal fats and its allies which promote heart-attacks, the hazard will be evident. The concept of feeding will therefore not be toiled with in all areas of life.

Truth has been described by the dictionary as something factual, a thing which is fact; something that is obviously true; a reality; statement that is generally believed to be true.

Jesus Christ informs us that He is the good shepherd and we are His sheep (John 10:11, 27). The Psalmist recognizes the Lord as his shepherd (Psalm 23:1,2). As God’s sheep our ‘green pasture’ and ‘quiet water’ come to us from God’s bounty and from His incarnate Son, Jesus Christ via the pages of the Bible. God commands His children to draw nourishment and power from His truth which has come to us in written form in human language (John 6:27-35; John 6:63,68)
People in the Bible times fed on God’s truth. The early disciples were firmly established in God’s truth (2 Peter 1:12). They held firmly to the message (Titus 1:9) and used the word of God as the standard for faith and life (Titus 2:5, 10). Jesus Christ encourages His follower to “live by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4; John 4:34). Apostle Paul advises Timothy and, perhaps all of us, to “continue in what we have learned and have become convinced of ” (2 Timothy 3:14).

The Spirit of God comes to believers as the Spirit of truth who guides mankind into all truths. Lack of proper connection to the Holy Spirit through genuine rebirth results in falsehood and false living. God expects all human beings to have full knowledge of truth (1Timothy 2:4).

God’s incarnate Son is Man’s ultimate source of grace and truth (John 1:17), and God’s message as contained in the Bible is the word of truth (John 17:17). The Bible is God-breathed and profitable for training people for good works (2 Timothy 3:16). Hence, the Bible is the final authority for life and truth; it guides us on how to live, how to do things aright and how to please God and fellow human beings. The Bible is a reference point in matters of truth. Any truth that disagrees with the Bible is either deception or heresy. The supreme, All-knowing God, who inspired the human writers of the Bible, has monopoly of truth (1 Timothy 3:15; Isaiah 45:19; Number 23:19). Lies and falsehood comes from Satan who is described as father of liars (John 8:44).
