Blockchain MMO Chainmonsters soon on Steam

Blockchain-powered online role playing game Chainmonsters is coming to Steam. The Pokémon-inspired online game will first be available in early access. The Steam version of the game supports VR-devices like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. A full release should happen somewhere in 2020.

Correction: blockchain features will not be removed, but only pushed to the background. New players will not be forced to do anything involving crypto, making the user experience friendlier for newcomers. Article has been edited to avoid confusion.

Besides the Steam release, the game will also be coming to iOS and Android. Chainmonsters will allow gamers to play cross-platform and to continue their adventures on the go.

Chainmonsters made $45.000 since it launched in 2017. However, the smart contracts in the game are old fashioned. Developers are now revamping the game, and making it easier for newcomers to get into the game. Crypto players will be allowed to connect their accounts and used their crypto-based trading cards as regular monsters in the game.

Chainmonsters trading cards

Trading cards? Yes, trading cards. Last month the developers announced a collectible card game based on their original game. The cards in this game don't provide any in-game statistics, but do bring a level of rarity. The developers will be making a series of mini-games. As a result of all this, every card will enable something into a game. The game's code is responsible for the effects the card has in a game, and not statistics on the collectible card itself. These cards also load monsters inside the MMO.

Gamers who invested early in Chainmonsters and got a Gen-0 monster, are able to convert their monsters into a rare HOLO card. They can then use this card in the Chainmonsters MMO as it will spawn a monster. The game will be a free-to-play game when its development will finish next year.

From RPG to Blockchain MMO

B-Side Games announced in early March that its blockchain role playing game would become an MMO. One month later the developers even launched the game's first public raid. After two years of development the original vision of Chainmonsters was not good enough. Technology improved and the game needed to change up its technical aspects.

Chainmonsters is build on the Ethereum blockchain. It was actually one of the first game to utilize ERC-721 tokens. The RPG is free-to-play and players are able to buy in-game coins in exchange for bitcoin or ethereum. The role playing games came with its own marketplace. Players are able to trade goods and monsters there.
