Fabulous Hot Spiced Gluhwein (Mulled Wine) Easy Step-By-Step Recipe

According to wikipedia Mulled wine is a beverage of European origins usually made with red wine along with various mulling spices and sometimes raisins. It is served hot or warm and is alcoholic, although there are non-alcoholic versions of mulled wine. It is a traditional drink during winter, especially around Christmas and Halloween. Wine was first recorded as spiced and heated in Rome during the 2nd century. The Romans travelled across Europe, conquering much of it and trading with the rest. The legions brought wine and viticulture with them up to the Rhine and Danube rivers and to the Scottish border, along with their recipes.

If some of you are unaware soon it’s Christmas again, so I guess this recipe might be very useful for many people here.

Given that it’s truly cold here now (-14C) as in many parts of the world (no wonder, huh?) I think the following easy recipe will be more than appropriate. It’s delicious, warming and will instantly set a festive mode.

Ingredients

  • 750 mL semi sweet (or dry) red wine, some inexpensive one;
  • 100 mL water;
  • 1-4 tbsp sugar (or honey) to taste;
  • sliced (or cut) orange or lemon;
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg;
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger;
  • 5 cloves;
  • 2-3 cinnamon sticks;
  • 2-3 star anise;
  • 5 whole allspice.

Let’s do it

Take a small pan, add ground nutmeg, ginger, cloves, cinnamon sticks, anise and allspice. Pour water and set on fire. Simmer, turn heat off and cover with a lid for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, pour a bottle of wine into a bigger suitable pan. Add a mixture above to wine and heat all together until steaming, but not yet simmering.

Serve while hot in mugs or glasses (preheated in hot water, otherwise they may break) with oranges or lemons.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
