The wooden barrel has played a very important role in the development of trade around the world. The Celts are credited with the modern barrel as we know it around the first century. They were iron workers and ship builders and these trades were key to the curved barrel with metal bands.

Barrels have carried everything from gunpowder, to water and wine. When used for spirits they found that the wood that the barrel was made out of, gave a very unique flavor to the spirit. Modern day oak barrels are also charred inside to add flavor to the drink.
This process of barrel making cannot be rushed, the curved wooden staves need to slowly cure. In fact the defeat of the Spanish Armada was in part caused by cracking barrels, food spoilage and loss of water, because they had lost so many barrels at war and they rushed to build green new barrels.

Just a snippet of barrel making history!!
