Barite Rose

barite.jpg

Today we went back to Draper lake to go hunting for barite rose. Barite rose is commonly found in central Oklahoma and is otherwise rarely occurring in other parts of the world.

This is a few of the larger pieces of rose rock that we found.

There is a legend from the Cherokee tribe that rose rocks were formed from the blood of the Braves and tears of the women that were marched west on the Trail of Tears. The Cherokee tribe also states that this story may have been fabricated by Anglo-Americans to help sell barite roses, as the barite rose is not naturally occuring on their lands.

Penny size pieces of rose rock sell for around $1 :)
