Mural for a high school.

This is a detail of the scale model of a mural that I designed for the cafeteria of a high school (the one I went to as an adolescent) in Illinois (USA). It was odd to walk down the halls of the old building so many years later. It looked like the same place I had known, but did not feel like it.

The building is a lovely old limestone structure that looks like a castle. It has plenty of carved wooden decorations and marble floors.

The young people in the mural are shown performing activities that are taught in this high school. They are proud of their technical programs. In the first picture in this post, a boy is learning soldering. Here is a future nurse:

On his sweatshirt is a steelman, the school's symbol.

Although I usually paint murals directly, this one came about differently. I made the scale model and it was digitally reproduced on large panels and installed in the cafeteria. The murals have a decorative purpose, but they are also intended to muffle the sound in the locale.
