The 10 most famous paintings in the world - Number 6: The Starry Night

The starry night is one of the masterpieces of the neo-impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh. Although many know some of his works, few know the stormy history of his life. However, his economic and emotional situation never interfered with his productivity, Van Gogh painted at least one painting a day, while his contemporaries took months to paint a single one.

The painting shows the outside view at night from the window of the Saint Rémy de Provence sanatorium room, where he secluded himself towards the end of his life. However, the work was painted during the day, by heart. It dates from the middle of 1889, thirteen months before Van Gogh's suicide. Since 1941 it has been part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
