The coke can cars

In this post you can see the illustration 'Toy' that I created for Chapter Thirty Three of @dougkarr's amazing novel Dwelling.

The sun was just beginning to make its daily exit over the neighborhood roofs. Stella sat on the stoop watching Chisulo play quietly on the sidewalk. Hunched over, Chisulo's hands drove a pair of discarded coke can cars his father had helped bend into shape.

Creating an illustration for Dwelling

April1829.jpg

I sketched the image of the toy car out in pencil, then I applied masking fluid in order to keep areas of the image white.

Using a range of brushes I added layers of ink and water washes to the picture.

An old toothbrush was used to flick ink onto the paper.

Once the initial layers of ink had dried the masking fluid was removed to reveal areas of white paper.

Having already run the vehicles through a series of high stakes races, Chisulo's fist was now a prized pickup in the monster truck rally he'd seen advertised on Channel 4

Finally a dip pen and drawing ink was used to draw in some of the finer details.

Winding up, hitting the ramp and taking flight, his monster cleared a dozen stock cars, soaring through the air and crashing on the last few wrecks, decimating them on impact. A bulldozer dragged him off his victims, the cars erupting in giant balls of flames, the stands breaking out in cheers.
