Walks around Saint-Petersburg#19.

I would like to talk about another architectural, historical and cultural building of St. Petersburg. This building is the Russian State Academic Bolshoi Drama Theater named after GA Tovstonogov (BDT). It is also located on the embankment of the Fontanka River.

The building on the Fontanka, in which the Grand and Small Scenes of the Bolshoi Drama Theater are located, was built by the architect Ludwig Fontana in 1876 - 1877 on the land owned by Count Apraksin. After completion of the building, the building was rented by the Directorate of Imperial Theaters. The audience could visit the Imperial Small Theater for the first time in 1879. In 1882, Count and Countess Apraksin surrendered the stage to entrepreneurs.

At the end of the XIX century, she performed the greatest actors and actresses of her era, including Eleonora Duse, Sarah Bernhard, Isadora Duncan. Since 1895 the theater was rented by the Literary and Artistic Circle, which was headed by the famous publisher, journalist and playwright Alexei Suvorin. Small Theater was increasingly called the Theater of Literary and Art Society Suvorin. In the Soviet period after the revolution of 1917 the building was taken from the Apraksins and transferred to the use of the Bolshoi Drama Theater. Today, this theater is considered one of the most famous theaters in the world. On the stage of the theater hundreds of talented and famous actors appeared. This theater is never empty and tickets for performances are in great demand among the audience.

We met with one more historical building of St. Petersburg. Thank you and I'm waiting for you again on walks around the city of St. Petersburg.
