Good evening, Hive! I always look forward to posting here each night, but the comic and illustration posts are easily my favorites. They might not do as well as the pinups in lingerie, but that’s a pretty easy equation to figure out. I wanted to be a comic book artist since I was full. That was my dream job. Full stop. Pinup photographer certainly isn’t a bad consolation career, but anything that gets me closer to what I’ve wanted to do my entire life, the better. This day, we were snowed in, so I managed to get a few hours of sketching done in bed.
I can’t reveal what this is for [yet], other than to say it is an ongoing NFT project for @mirrorpool. This is something of a Kaiju monster, derived from an actual spider. The Chinese Hourglass trapdoor spider is all the proof you need that nature can evolve creatures far beyond most of our imaginations. The spider has impossibly intricate, uniquely human markings on the rear of its abdomen, which is uses to plug the hole of its burrow as it waits for prey to unknowingly traverse on the ground above.
My concept for this giant spider is the same, but to create a wall with a massive skull inscription. To humans and onlookers, it would look like the facade of an enormous ruins, but when disturbed, the spider could quickly pounce backwards and eat the unsuspecting intruder. This one borrows a lot from an Indiana Jones sort of world, just with unnatural, prehistoric beasts. It’s rare that I can finish two complete concept sketches in a single day, so cheers for the productivity with both of these.
Tomorrow, bright and early, I have a podcast with Anders of Any Observation to talk about Dark Pinup Act Two. Afterwards, I’m really looking forward to getting as much drawing in as possible before kickboxing in the evening. I never take the iPad Pro for granted. I waited years for this device when it was just a rumor and bought it the day, and hour the stores opened. It’s transformed my life and given me the ability to realize a dream job. Paying gratitude for this weird, winding journey I’m on.
