In oil painting it is important to learn the relationship between the amount of
solvent and oil you add to the paint. The more solvent the faster it dries. The more oil the slower it dries.

Soil pigments dries in about 1 day. More opaque paints and metal paints take longer - 4 days

For a painting to not crack it is important to always paint from lean to fat - the fattest should be at the top - that is the layer hitting air. Equally important is it to led the painting dry completely before adding stock varnish - otherwise it molds.

Some master painters made colors vibrant through layering colors. When light passes through a transparent color, hits a opaque color and then bounces back i will get certain qualities. Bright color on top of dark color - brings out the cold aspects of the bright color. And then the opposite relationship.

Exercise your color vision with a limited pallet and ask yourself the question: how should I do to show that something is warmer than something else without using the true opposites like really blue and yellow/orange.

Use as few tubes as possible - then it's easier to create harmony.. How many do you need me to paint a rainbow

Transparent colors are often the cold colors and they are often more environmentally friendly.

All different pigments have different artistic qualities. Some are soloists and some are team players.

One way to create color harmony is to add a little of each color in each color.

Collect old color and mix together to get the best gray color.

Paint without black and white.

Dull a color with the complement color. Make black by mixing complements.

To wash the oil from the brush - have a green soap in a plastic cup and rub the lighter brush in the cup first. Then replace and rub the dark brush until it does not let go of anything more of the dark. Continue to change brush from dark to light, etc. In the end wash it in water and let dry horizontally. Never place a brush in water for more than 5 minutes - it ruins the brush!!!!
