Greetings earthlings! A mantis from space says hello!
One day my friend said
Friend: ey jassy draw me a mantis?
Me: okay (draws a mantis)
Ok sassy hows this?
Friend: wow its ossum. Yea can you draw this
background?.the lava, milky way, the
stars and sun? Oh yea and some ruby
sapphire and emerald other colors too
and jupiter next to the sun"
Okay?? That is just too much. Wasnt expecting that but its Interesting and challenging. Have to say okay then....
Here are the step by step pics of how i drew this complicated space art. Using
Colored pencils
Let me explain first how i draw. I usually draw light to dark. Base colors using pastel colors or very soft and light tones then layering them.
Then i go darker with midtone and darker shadows then i blend them using pastel colored pencils likeblight blue/grey/purple
Here we goooooo
Sketch it!
Then color base colors
Praying mantis are very diverse species and comes in all colors and shapes.
So i finished the mantis' body here.
Off to the background.
So rocks and lava
This is my reference
Lava is incredibly difficult to draw.
I slowly worked on it.
I use leave out method (plain white paper is left untouched) for rocks. Later on i just roughly color it with silver and grey. And gems i added out of my own mind. I just used scattered references from google so i have an idea how to make it look natural.
Then i use redviolet, brown, blue, violet green and black for rocks behind him. The lava is bright yellow, orange and pink .. plus black and brown. So it looks glowing cause of the contrast.
Layering many colors makes it natural looking. I practically used the rainbow to color this.
Next i make the sky. I have NEVER ever done the sky before, night time with stars, dust cloud, a sun and a shooting star or is it a comet? And jupiter. Phew.
I stated with the clouds. Working my way up.
I even asked help from my friends. Haha
Leave out process is not applicable due to the quantity. So i opted to use a white pen and apply using pointilism. But before that i must fill the background with layers of colors.
A lighter sky is present near the sunshine while the other side is darker.
Oh look jupiters looking good.
Next layer violet blue and black and blue green and leave out some cloudy white spaces. This is the milky way. I then added yellow pink and sky blue. Patches all around.
Here we have a starless sky
The sun is there. A ring of yellow rays should be seen.
I used silver and gold and white pens going DOT DOT DOT all around
Lets zoom in the rocks and gems first.
Then the finished product
Done.
This is useful for space art/scifi movie fans ey?
Or if you ever want to draw mount doom..
Hope you like it.
