You can see here a representative of the oxides, which is also known under the name Goethite and the mineral was named in honor of the well-known German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 - 1832), who was also very interested in minerals in his time and had his own collection. Goethe learned a lot about minerals in his young years and after he had finished his studies at that time, he devoted himself to mining and he became chairman of a commission and he specialized particularly in copper and silver mining and campaigned for some decommissioned mines to be reopened and he himself had a huge collection containing over 17000 specimens. Goethite has a very high proportion of iron which can often be over 60% and the formation can be attributed to oxidation in iron-containing deposits and furthermore it can also be of hydrothermal origin and it is often found together with other iron minerals such as pyrite or magnetite. In 2004 even traces were found on the red planet Mars which became known after the Roman god of war and on Earth it is a rather more common mineral which has already been found in thousands of different locations and among the most important are Cornwall, Mexico, Africa, North America and China. Due to the high content of iron, it previously played an very important role and was used as an ore and it is also of interest for the production of natural colors for artists and it is still used for the production of brown or ochre colors.
