(Learning is an Asset)

An encyclopedia,
Is Lydia, dear Lydia,
Interesting facts she did adore so,
Anecdotal news even more so.
Ever yearning,
For extra learning,
She’d study all through the night.
Rising early, ever so bright
Soon she learned nearly all there was,
She just had to because, because,
The information was freely available
On internet and library table.
For her, learning was just the norm.
Until she had a big brainstorm!
This disturbance of a cerebral nature
Caused her to want to really make sure
That all that she knew,
Filled her whole I.Q.
If there was no more space
She could relax her study pace
And live a more normal life.
Even become someone’s wife.

So it was that she met Freddy Hota
Who clearly didn’t have her intelligence quota
He was very handsome and so she thought
That he would improve, just as he ought.
But unfortunately he was a bit of a clod.
Not only that, but decidedly odd!
So, rather than “a match made in heaven”
(Did I mention they’d moved to Devon)
They had a few problems that dirtied the nest
For Freddy was an indolent and lazy pest.
He frequented the pub, just down the street,
Rather than working for something to eat.
So when he came home in inebriated state
Lydia grabbed his ear and showed him the gate.
The moral being “look before you leap”
To avoid being saddled with a lazy creep.
Don’t rush in and marry in haste
(Think of all the time you’ll waste)
And repent in leisure
(That certainly gives no pleasure)
So now Lydia burns the midnight hours
With an encyclopedia she does browse.
