Ayubi Sultal al-Kamel source
Salahuddin Ayubi, the famous Muslim ruler and commander, built the fort in 1176-83, on the eastern side of the city of Muqatam. Later, its expansion was completed in 1218-38 under Ayubi Sultal al-Kamel. For the next several centuries, the fort was used as the residence and governance of the Muslim rulers of that period.

Since the advent of Islam in the seventh century, the development of Muslim architecture began. Along with the conquest of various towns and cities, Muslims were building mosques and mausoleum structures.
