Antelope of South Africa – Nyala - by @capecobragen

DSC05346.JPG

The Nyala - One of the 29 Species of Antelope found in South Africa. One of the most beautiful of them all.

They have a natural distribution in the Limpopo River Valley, The Kruger National Park and Zululand in South Africa. However through the captive breeding program it has been introduced into many Private Game Reserves and Private Farms around South Africa.

They can become quite tame and feed out of one’s hand - as seen in the picture taken at Sondela Private Game Reserve in South Africa.

The female (in this photo) is completely different in appearance to the male. The male has spiraled horns, is a lot larger and has a dark shaggy coat with white stripes on.

They enjoy thick bush around water.

They are found in small family groups consisting of a male, a few females and their young. Males are also found in small bachelor herds or older ones seem to prefer a solitary life.

It is always a thrill to see the Nyala.
