Synopsis

High schooler Nanami Momozono has quite a few problems of late, beginning with her absentee father being in such extreme debt that they lose everything. Downtrodden and homeless, she runs into a man being harassed by a dog. After helping him, she explains her situation, and to her surprise, he offers her his home in gratitude. But when she discovers that said home is a rundown shrine, she tries to leave; however, she is caught by two shrine spirits and a fox familiar named Tomoe. They mistake her for the man Nanami rescued—the land god of the shrine, Mikage. Realizing that Mikage must have sent her there as a replacement god, Tomoe leaves abruptly, refusing to serve a human.

Rather than going back to being homeless, Nanami immerses herself in her divine duties. But if she must keep things running smoothly, she will need the help of a certain hot-headed fox. In her fumbling attempt to seek out Tomoe, she lands in trouble and ends up sealing a contract with him. Now the two must traverse the path of godhood together as god and familiar; but it will not be easy, for new threats arise in the form of a youkai who wants to devour the girl, a snake that wants to marry her, and Nanami's own unexpected feelings for her new familiar.

Review

A love that lasted for over five hundred years without knowing that it's with the same person and between a youkai and a human at that!

Look at the genre, it's a shoujo! This is one of the best shoujo manga (and anime) I've seen and read. In the shoujo and fantasy genres, love between human and a youkai is very common. I don't know, maybe it has beauty in its own. However, this anime and manga is completely different to all biracial couples.

Tomoe is very loyal to his first love even though it's a human girl. He is so devoted to the Mikage Shrine which has become his home after he lost Yukiji 500 years ago. He is already 'perfect' as what Nanami claims him to be. He really is like a superman capable of doing household chores (washing, cleaning, cooking, etc.) that a girl would be put to shame (I can't cook so I think he's amazing in that aspect) if compared to him.

Nanami, on the other hand, is the complete opposite of Tomoe, she's fickle (sometimes), and very lazy (when it comes to her studying). She can't do household chores properly and so on and so on. Typical of a girl her age. However, her charming point is her smile and courage. She doesn't lose hope easily despite all odds. A very positive-minded girl to the point that it's stupid. :3

The story is really very sad. I just can't imagine a man loving only one woman for over five centuries. Imagine their pain when Tomoe lost Yukiji (he actually fell in love with Nanami). But that's normal, because he's a demon fox and she's a human. Surely, both of them (Tomoe and Nanami) are meant for each other. They met again after so long, started new life without memories of each other from the past. Ahh, reading and watching this one made me really want to fall in love. They're just so amazing!

This anime and manga is highly recommended. If you don't like shoujo stories then this one will make you love it.

P.S.: I love watching series about Youkai and humans but when spirits and ghost in real life comes to you, it's really scary. How come youkai and monsters in the anime are very hot, cute, handsome or cool? Is this even justified? :3
