Do dogs have memory? Several studies on learning in animals, and especially in dogs, have been aimed at memorizing objects and useful actions to complete specific tasks. According to recent studies, the best friend of man has a memory, and is able to develop strategies to solve problems, as well as learning by imitation. Dr. Maria Grazia Calore, veterinarian and specialist in behavior of domestic animals, helps us to understand some aspects of this matter
The dog's memory and our behavior
So, also in dogs, each experience leaves traces in the memory: some more indelible than others, and these can be remembered. There are positive memories, which come from positive experiences (fixed by behavioral reinforcement through food, caresses and social approval) but there are also negative experiences (unfortunately the latter are the ones that have the tendency to last, both long and in the short term, although this is convenient for the survival of the animal). Therefore, when we interact with a dog, remember that they also have memory.
