Edaphoclimatic requirements and agronomic management of sweet bell pepper

In terms of edaphoclimatic requirements, sweet bell pepper plants require a warm or temperate climate. The minimum temperature for germination and growth is 15°C while for flowering and fruiting is 18°C.

▶ Optimum temperatures range from 20°C and 30°C. It is very demanding in terms of light, especially in the early stages of development and flowering. Relative humidity ranges between 50-70% and rainfall between 500 and 600 mm/year.

Chili requires deep, well-drained, sandy loam soils, with a neutral pH of 6.5 to 7, rich in mineral nutrients and with an organic matter content of 3-4%.

For agronomic management, first sowing is done in the seedbed, although they can be sown directly in the field, a previous phase of seedbed and subsequent transplanting to final field is recommended.

To do this, after the seedbed soil has been prepared, fertilized and treated (with the treatment and product chosen or available), the seed is placed, trying to separate the seeds by 1 to 1.5 cm from each other, then they are covered with a 5 cm layer of soil and watered.

The seedbed can be covered with rice husks or straw, avoiding that they contain seeds. The seeds germinate between 8 and 10 days and the seedbed time can range from 22 to 30 days.
