How totally ageists it has been for a very long time besides, of course, the usual misogyny where there are more female nudes on canvas in museums than women artists ever shown there.

This week something monumental has taken place. The Turner Prize has scrapped their ageist policy which discriminated against over 50s applying for the prize. The prize was first awarded in 1984. It was founded by a group called the Patrons of New Art who had been formed in 1982 to encourage wider interest in contemporary art and assist the (then) Tate Gallery in acquiring new works and it only considered artists under 50 years of age until now. The prize was awarded for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation in the preceding year.

Helen Martin was the winner in 2015 with her playful sculptural works.

Many artist work well into their nineties and their art only gets richer and better, imbued with wisdom.

As a society it is about time we let go of the" wizard and witches (hags)" myth of aging, namely that men become wise with age and women old useless hags...
