Walk&Talk 3: Digital Identity

What is Walk&Talk?

Welcome to my new series of articles, Walk&Talk. In this series, I will combine my actifit activity with information of diverse topics.

Today I visited a police station to renew the digital certificate inside my ID card. Spain was one of the first countries issuing electronics ID, starting by 2006. The digital certificate expires after two years, but it can be renovated in specific stands using your fingerprint as verification method.

Having an electronic ID provides several advantages. You can use it to sign digital documents and to do lots of official procedures remotely, saving time for users and émployees for the government. However, in Spain the platform still has some issues because of the use of outdated software platforms. As sample of the bad working of this system, Firefox has not accepted to include the certificate for using the Spanish electronic ID, although it can be installed manually. However, the service has been gradually improving since its creation, and the unification of the identification under the Cl@ve platform has reduced the technical issues dramatically. The second version of the ID card includes an NFC chip for identification in Android devices.

Passports can also have an electronic chip. Automated border control systems (ABC) allow users with electronic passport to cross borders without borders agent intervention.

Estonia is the country with the most advanced electronic ID, which can be used for electronic voting and in public transport. Non resident can also obtain an electronic ID without obtainind citizenship, for uses such as company formation, banking and payment processing.

Do you have an electronic ID? Would you like to tell us about the experience using it?
