Kutacane is the capital of Southeast Aceh district in Nangroe Aceh Darussalam Province (NAD). Southeast Aceh region is located in a mountainous area with an altitude of 1,000 meters above sea level. Geographically, Southeast Aceh Regency in the north is bordered by Gayo Lues regency in the east with North Sumatera Province and East Aceh Regency, south to South Aceh Regency, Aceh Singkil and North Sumatra Province, and to the west with South Aceh Regency .

In Kutacane from 1956-1962 an At-Taqwa Great Mosque was built in the student complex of Babussalam in the center of Kutacane built by the Muslim community there.
