The capital of Simeulue Regency is Sinabang, if spoken with the regional accent is Si navang derived from the legend of Navang. Navang was the ancient salt maker in the Babang area (the entrance to Sinabang bay, formerly Navang made salt by stemming sea water entering Babang beach, then dried and then salt.) Navang salt gradually became known around Ujung Panarusan to Lugu. If the people need salt, then they will go to the Navang, which gradually 'V' consonant on Navang turns into Nabang, while Sibigo capital of Simeulue Barat district comes from CV and Co because of colonial times, Sibigo is company location Rasak wood processing - a very hard wood equivalent to Teak - is shipped to the Netherlands via sea Because of its isolated geographical position from the island of Sumatra, the frenzy of conflicts in mainland Aceh has never affected in this region, there is not even a GAM movement in the archipelago this.

History
Improvement of Simeulue status into District has been pioneered for a long time and was born from the lofty desire of Simeulue community itself that is through the initiative of a number of figures and all components of society. The milestone of this struggle began since the Simeulue People's Congress, which was originally held in 1956, was constrained at the time and was only carried out in 1957. One of the historical evidence that still exists today is the Decision of the Simeulue Kewedanaan Congress (Dok Rasmal Kahar) Congress and an obsolete banner of congress implementation that has been worn by age. At that time the Governor of Aceh, Prof. Ali Hasjmi made a visit to Simeulue in 1957 as a manifestation of his support for the content of the People's Congress of Simeulue in an effort to improve Simeulue's status. Then in 1963 again held the deliberations of Luan Balu and continued Simeulue People's Consultation and in 1980, where the results of all these meetings there is only one word and one determination that Simeulue must change status to Autonomous District. Along with the passage of time, the struggle continues to be continued by the public figures of Simeulue, so that for the struggle that so persistent and tireless, we get support from various parties, namely the Level I DPRD Aceh and Level II Regional House of West Aceh. Further development after Drs. H. Muhammad Amin was inaugurated as Assistant of the Regent of Simeulue, this effort was continuously and proven in 1995. The Governor of Aceh sent a team to update the data to Simeulue followed by the arrival of the Director General of Bangda to Simeulue on 12 December 1995.

At the end of this journey, the arrival of the Director General of PUOD, DPODS, and Commission II of the House of Representatives on March 30, 1996 and held a rally in front of the Simeulue District Assistant's march. Where at that time, J. Sondakh as Chairman of Commission II of the House of Representatives said today's meeting as if the DPR-RI session outside the building because it was fully attended by four factions namely: Golkar faction, PPP, PDI and Fraction of Regional Representatives and he promised in not so long Simeulue will be upgraded. Alhamdulillah thanks to Allah SWT, finally the result of all these visits and the sincere intentions and prayers of Simeulue society, the President of the Republic of Indonesia Mr. H. Mohammad Soeharto on 13 August 1996 signed the Government Regulation 53 of 1996 on improving the status of the Assistant Regent of Simeulue to the District Simeulue Administrative. Subsequently on September 27, 1996 at the Provincial DPRD of the Special Province of Aceh, the Simeulue Administrative District was inaugurated by the Minister of Home Affairs Mr. Yogie S. Memet and inaugurated Drs. H. Muhammad Amin as Regent of Simeulue Administrative District. Simeulue has changed status even though it is still administrative, the whole community is happy with gratitude echoed from Ujung Batu Belayar to Batu Si Ambung-Ambung. The district that is considered a dream by some people has been present in the life of Simeulue people. This new status has heightened the enthusiasm for striving to reach another stage of the autonomous region. To achieve that effort all the potential is deployed, the mind and energy are poured, the sweat pouring where all the children of the islands shoulder to shoulder and accompanied by prayers that are always prayed for an aspiration. Finally god grant what is desired, so through Law no. 48 Year 1999 was born of Simeulue Regency and Regency of Bireun as Autonomous Regency in the treasury of Government of Indonesia. Then on 12 October 1999 the Minister of Home Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia Ad Interim Faisal Tanjung inaugurated the birth of Simeulue Regency and this date is used as the anniversary of Simeulue Regency which is annually celebrated.
