It is fear of immigrants, as it is with all the other fear campaigns from the MAGA GOP. Fear of trans people, fear of homosexuals, fear of immigrants, fear of the public school system, fear of a "militarized" IRS, fear of Cultural Marxism (which is a Nazi-meme) and so on. You could have a point that now's not the time for millions of new mouths to feed, but then again, when was it ever a good time to help helpless people for the Republican Party? FYI: these immigrants generally don't choose when to leave their country; they go when they must. And then there's the flip-side: more mouths to feed means more potential customers to serve, means more jobs. It's a widely accepted fact that immigration, in the long term, has a positive effect on the nation's economy. Last fact: it's all a ruse by the GOP, it's a fake war. Why do you think they come up with ineffective stunts like "the wall"? Most immigrants simply overstay their visa and entered the country legally; a wall is the dumbest idea ever. But the truth is that they don't want to end illegal immigration, not completely, as they gratefully exploit the cheap labor they provide.
