I’m Starting From Almost Zero — Can I Build an
Online Income With Just a Phone?
There is something I’ve been thinking about for a long time:
Can an ordinary person build a real online income without having money, expensive equipment, or a perfect starting point?
I don't know the answer yet.
And honestly, that's why I'm writing this post.
My name is Zayd, I'm from Yemen, and I'm currently trying to figure out how to build something online using what I already have — mainly my phone, an internet connection, and the willingness to learn.
I'm not here to pretend that I've already succeeded.
I'm at the beginning.
And maybe that's the most honest part of this story.
Starting With Limitations
When people talk about making money online, the advice often sounds simple:
“Create an account.”
“Start freelancing.”
“Sell digital products.”
“Build a business.”
But there is another side that isn't always discussed.
Not every payment service is available in every country.
Not every platform works the same way everywhere.
And sometimes something that takes five minutes for one person can take much longer for someone else.
That has forced me to become more patient and, more importantly, to research before trusting an opportunity.
I've learned that “online” doesn't automatically mean “accessible.”
AI Changed the Way I Learn
Artificial intelligence has become another interesting part of this journey.
I use AI mainly as a learning and productivity tool.
When I don't understand something, I can ask questions.
When I have an idea, I can develop it.
When I write something badly, I can ask for suggestions.
But I don't want AI to become my replacement.
I want it to become my assistant.
There is a big difference.
I still want my experiences, opinions, mistakes, and personality to be present in what I publish.
Otherwise, what's the point of sharing my journey?
I'm Not Looking for a Shortcut
One thing I'm trying to avoid is the endless cycle of “easy money” opportunities.
I've seen plenty of claims promising quick income.
Some sound impressive.
Some sound almost too good to be true.
And that taught me another lesson:
If an opportunity requires you to believe a dream before showing you a realistic process, be careful.
I'd rather spend weeks learning a real skill than spend one day chasing a fake promise.
My first goal isn't $1,000.
It isn't becoming famous.
It isn't building a huge business overnight.
My first goal is much smaller:
Make something useful that someone is genuinely willing to pay for.
Then learn from that experience.
Then improve.
Then repeat.
Why I'm Sharing This Here
I'm also interested in the people behind this community.
One of the things I like about platforms such as Ecency and Hive is that people come from completely different backgrounds.
Someone reading this might be a freelancer.
Someone else might be a developer.
Another person might be a photographer, writer, artist, gamer, or content creator.
Everyone has a different starting point.
And sometimes one simple comment from someone who has already walked the road can save another person months of mistakes.
That's what I'm hoping to find here.
Not shortcuts.
Experience.
This Is Only Step One
I don't know what the final result of this experiment will be.
Maybe I'll succeed.
Maybe I'll fail at several ideas before finding something that works.
Maybe I'll discover that the skill I thought was right for me isn't right at all.
But I'm okay with that.
Because I'm starting to understand that building something online isn't really one big decision.
It's a collection of small decisions:
Learn something.
Try it.
Make a mistake.
Fix it.
Try again.
Meet people.
Listen.
Improve.
Repeat.
And eventually, those small steps might become something bigger.
So this is my first real step.
I'm sharing where I am before I know how the story ends.
And perhaps, months from now, I'll be able to look back at this post and see how far I've come.
