Hey there, Hive friends! Wishing you all a great life!

Today, I want to talk to you about technology—but a different kind of technology. I'm talking about assistive technology.

For those who don't know, I am completely blind. So, whether I'm writing here or playing games, I use software designed specifically for my situation.

Mobile Tech

In this post, I want to focus on smartphones and how we manage apps.
Until recently—and I'm not trying to run an ad here—we could pretty much only use iPhones (at least from the iPhone 8 onward). It was the only phone with the VoiceOver feature, which basically narrates everything happening on the screen. For instance, when someone called you, the phone would tell you who it was, or it would read out the text messages you received.

Nowadays, at least here in Italy, you can get an equivalent phone for free. Right now, I'm using a Motorola with a pre-installed app from the manufacturer called Speaky Mobile.
This feature works exactly like the one on the iPhone. It lets you use all your apps, make calls with simple voice commands, and browse the internet.

Let's look at a few specific features:

  • Screen Scrolling: To move between apps, you just swipe left or right with one finger. Once you reach the app you want, you just double-tap to open it.

  • Voice Commands: If you tap the screen with two fingers, you'll hear a sound. After that, you just say "open messages," and following another beep, your messages will open right up.

  • Adding Attachments: You can choose whether to use voice commands or simply tap your fingers on the screen. It's really easy to use, whether you're in an email or on WhatsApp.

  • Taking Photos and Videos: Even though taking photos isn't a huge priority for someone who is blind, if you give the command "take photo," the phone will use the rear camera to snap a picture. On the other hand, if you say "video," it will start recording. To stop it, you just tap the screen with one finger.

  • Apps: The phone comes with plenty of pre-installed apps right out of the box. For example, WhatsApp, a news app, Facebook, and an app connected to the National Library for the Blind, where you can download 25,000 audiobooks of all kinds.

  • Lookout: This is an app that lets you read text, explore the room you're in, recognize currency, or scan documents.

The best part is that you can download other apps without any issues. Or rather, the only real roadblock is if those apps aren't accessible. But myself and many other visually impaired users are fighting to make everything more accessible—striving for a web world completely free of barriers.

I know this might sound like basic stuff, but thanks to this technology, we have access to an increasingly virtual world. Just think about banking, online shopping, or simply looking up information—we have everything right at our fingertips.

I could go on for hours talking about useful apps, but it would be impossible to list them all.

Independence

Thanks to these technologies, we can manage a part of our lives in total autonomy. We no longer have to constantly ask others to do things for us. With our phones, we are—at least for a bit—independent again. And for someone who is blind, that is a truly wonderful thing.

Current Issues

We haven't reached perfection just yet, but we're getting close. One of the biggest issues, as far as I know from current fixes, is browsing websites that are packed with images and videos. Unfortunately, because they are so heavy, they can freeze the screen reader, forcing you to close the page.
Another minor issue is when you lose signal. Some features rely entirely on voice commands, so if you don't have cell service, it won't work and you can't use them.

I hope this brief overview helps you recommend these phones to a blind friend or acquaintance. You would make someone very happy.

Thank you all for taking the time to read this, and see you soon!

Yours,
zumzulik

zumzulik
