Online scams are the worst, its almost always mind boggling when you here how people fall for them but at the same time you cant but pity them and know that almost anyone can fall for them, no one is too smart or intelligent to fall for them. Even billionaires and established entrepreneurs have fallen for scams, but today, scams have become so sophisticated and common that almost everybody either has a personal experience or knows someone who has fallen victim to one. At this point, protecting yourself online is no longer optional, you just have to be conscious and protect not only your financial assets but also your personal data.
Honestly, I think one of the reasons online scams have become more dangerous is because scammers now understand human emotions better than technology itself. Especially most of these romance scmas, they are the most used type of scams and most scams are no longer just random messages filled with terrible grammar asking for your bank details. They now look convincing, emotional, and sometimes even professional. For me, one of the first ways I protect myself from online scammers is by distrusting anything i did not initiate, whether it is clicking a link, transferring money, sharing an OTP, or “claiming” a prize immediately, especially when it comes to claiming prizes and also be very careful on phishing scams, especially when it comes to people that receive a lot of emails , you have to be very careful. These days we receive alot of mails and we just click on the links without thinking they have repercussions but they do, do not click on any links that you did not initiate, just clicking these days is enough for someone to have access to your wallets and passwords.
In the world today, I honestly believe digital scams tied to banking are among the most dangerous. Especially the ones where scammers impersonate banks agents or even government agencies. I remember wactching a true crime docu series of a woman that fell for a scam in which a person pretended to be a government agent and she fell for it twice. Sometimes they call with so much confidence that people genuinely believe they are speaking to legitimate officials.
Another dangerous category and i dare say the most common is romance and emotional manipulation scams, which sometimes can even lead to blackmail, especially when nudes are involved. A lot of people underestimate these because they think only “gullible” people fall for them, but loneliness and vulnerability can affect anybody. Personally, I avoid clicking random links, it doesnt no matter how harmless they look. I also try to verify information independently instead of trusting screenshots or forwarded messages. I go on google or reddit and try to verify and you will see genuine responses.
My advice to others would simply be this slow down online. Scammers often succeed because they manipulate greed. If it looks too good to be true the it is, verify before trusting and even after verifying if your gut feeling tells you not to trust it. Then Dont!!!!
