This prompt brings me to when people often ask whether you would rather experience extreme heat or extreme cold. I don't know why this is even a debate personally. Give me the cold every single day, i would rather wear layers of clothing, wrap myself in a blanket, and complain about how cold it is than spend an afternoon feeling like I am being slowly roasted alive. Unfortunately, where I live, the dry season is a yearly reminder that nature doesn't particularly care about my preferences.
We have just two seasons this part of the world, the dry season and the rainy season, the rainy season again just ended and we are now in the dry season. The heat is one thing, but the worst part is that you cannot always escape it. You can stay indoors, open the windows, take a cold shower, and try to make yourself comfortable, but when the heat has decided to make your life miserable, there is only so much you can do. You start sweating even when you are doing absolutely nothing, and yes it is that hot. I remember one time in secondary school where we literally had to re-write our test because it was so hot and we did bad.
Of course again there is the electricity situation, I honestly think the dry season would be considerably more bearable if we had a reliable power supply that was cheap also or cheaper as the case may be. At least you could turn on an air conditioner and pretend that life was not so bad, i didnt even say turn on the fan because the fan just blows hot air almost all the time. Imagine being in a hot room, sweating, desperately trying to sleep, and then the electricity goes out.
Sometimes, it feels like the weather and the electricity supply have formed an alliance against your peace of mind. Sometimes i have to bathe like 3 or four times a day minimum, cos i go out alot and every time i go out and come back home i have to take a bath. I know that the rainy season has its own problems. Flooding can destroy homes, damage roads, disrupt businesses, and leave people stranded. I am not saying that the rainy season is perfect or that the problems it brings are insignificant. I understand this but still despite all these disadvantages, I still prefer it. The atmosphere feels different when it rains. Its so cozy and nice, the air becomes cooler, the environment feels fresher. Even the sound of rainfall can be relaxing when you are not worried about your roof leaking or your neighbourhood flooding.
Of course, I am speaking from the perspective of someone who would rather deal with a little inconvenience than spend months fighting for survival against the heat. Someone whose house is flooded might have a completely different opinion, and understandably so. I have also been hearing about El Niño, its my first time hearing about it but I will admit that I do not understand the subject in depth. From what I gather, it is a climate phenomenon involving unusually warm sea surface temperatures and thats about it for me.
Still, when you already live somewhere where the dry season can be exhausting, hearing about another climate phenomenon that can contribute to unusual weather conditions does not exactly inspire confidence. I would prefer not to discover that the weather has another level of difficulty it can unlock.
