Hello everyone, today's topic is special because it's about nepotism. When think about it thoroughly I didn't think about famous actors or politicians. Instead, the thing first came into my mind was the incident that I remembered which happened at my school. So, yeah I have experienced such things personally and I'm excited to share about it to you all.
Every school holds an art competition every year and so does our school. Everyone spends their whole week with paintings and trying to win in the art competition, whoever is the winner their artwork gets displayed in the school hallway as an honour. Many students including me, we usually look forward to it because it gives us a chance to show our creativity.
So, few years ago one of my classmates who was one of the best artist in our school she gave her time and hard work on her painting. She literally stayed after school to finish every little detail and even started over twice because she always preferred perfection. So, when she had finished her art all of us were stunned and almost everyone agreed that she was going to be the winner. Because there was no flaws in her artwork.
But guess what? She didn't win. When the results were announced we heard someone else's name and she received the first place. Everyone was disappointed, including our class teacher. Few days later, we discovered that the winner's mother was one of the judges. I don't know if the decision was intentional or not but to be honest, it didn't feel legit and it made many of us say that there was no need for a competition if they were gonna choose someone they have bond with. Like we already knew who was going to be the winner because everyone could see how hard that girl worked but she couldn't win because of nepotism and I could tell she was really sad even though she smiled.
It was my first time when I encountered nepotism. I could finally realize what nepotism could look like. So, it was not about some movie stars or getting a high-paying job. Sometimes it happens in small places where people think, "It's just one small favor." But even small favors can take away opportunities from people who honestly earned them.
Do I think nepotism should be a crime? I don't think every situation should be treated as a criminal act. As we all know parents have natural instinct and they want to help their children. If my parents introduced me to a teacher through their connections, like someone who could teach me new art skills or encouraged me to enter a competition, then I don't think that would be wrong. Because I think families should support each other and inspire each other.
The real problem starts when someone uses their power to give unfair advantages to someone they know. A judge shouldn't choose their bonds over someone who clearly did better. Because if they do that then I can't call that fair anymore. Anyway, I believe that if it happens constantly in schools or government offices those things should have serious consequences because it destroys ones trust and confidence.
However, the one receiving benefits I think they should also think about it "Would I still deserve this if my family/friend wasn't involved?" If the answer is no, then they should not accept such advantages and let the righteous person have it. When you're not worthy of something and you need someone else's help to get it then it's better not to try getting it. Because it could backfire if other people starts taking against such nepotism.
I personally do not support the idea of nepotism, when connections become more valuable than talent and hard work then it's obviously unfair. I would rather lose a fair competition than win because someone gave me special treatment. I would be more happy when I know that I have truly earned it. I don't want someone's help if I'm truly qualified for it.
That would help me gain some self respect for myself. But if I get awarded for something I never deserved then it would unfair to others and I would never feel happy about it. I think everyone should have this kind of mindsets then unfairness would reduce. Because if there are no consumers then there would be no circumstances for these unfair situations.
Also, I think sometimes we can not define which work is the best. Like how would we define which one is better? We could be wrong sometimes and it could be like the one who deserves got it. And some people out of jealousy would call it rigged. Like it happens a lot around us.
For an example, in FIFA world cup there are some unfair moments because of the referee but people prefer to blame the winning team and not the one who was being unfair. It happens in every match but they preferred to call world cup rigged. Actually, every time someone's favourite team loses they would call it rigged. I think this is a childish behaviour, like not being able to accept the loss. Also, if their favourite team remains then it's not rigged anymore.
I think we should let professionals decide that, because we are sitting at home and most of us are seasonal fans. So, we shouldn't claim anything just like that. We can have theories but calling it rigged is too harsh. Also, if a team was playing that bad then they would get disqualified earlier. So, yeah sometimes we can be wrong so we should think twice before saying it's nepotism.
