Is it just me that thinks that if your bed is laid to perfection - I mean, your pillows are properly puffed and placed just right, your bedsheet is snugly tucked in and void of any wrinkles - then the room is instantly brought to life?
I鈥檝e noticed that so long as your bed is made, regardless of the state of the rest of the room, the room is automatically pleasing to be in. I say this to say, my bed is the number one item in my room that brings me peace. I might even go as far as saying the state of my bed determines the state of my mind.
Then, of course, there is the aspect of lying down on the bed and retiring for the night. The fact that I can fully relax on my bed and wind down after a long day. That is a privilege.
This might even be the reason why most motivational speakers advise people to make their beds first thing in the morning. My bed is the number one item that is essential to my peace.
This might sound weird, but another item that gives me peace is my solar panelled lamp. It鈥檚 amazing to see that the energy from the sun can be harnessed and transformed into usable electricity. My aunt got this lamp for us. And before I moved to Ekiti state, I didn鈥檛 really mind the lamp, because we had semi-constant electricity.
But after moving to a place where electricity was as rare as gold, I developed a newfound appreciation for the lamp. Especially for someone who loves to have a night light on throughout the night, this lamp has served me well. I usually put it on the lowest setting, and it stays on all through the night.
When I need to charge it, I just place it outside, on a surface where it can get uninterrupted access to the harsh sun rays. Apart from drying my clothes, this is another reason I am grateful for the hot African sun (I have only these two reasons though馃槄).
Last year, I indulged in some notebooks, well, some books in general. While browsing through the aisles of a supermarket, I came across this cute wide orange journal. For some reason, my soul frowned at the thought of leaving without it. And so I added it to the cart, literally.
Over the past year, this journal has been helpful to me in more ways than I could have planned. Anytime I go through a trauma-inducing experience, I find peace in the knowledge that writing down my feelings in this journal would help take the stress off my shoulders.
And that it has.
Now my mop itself doesn鈥檛 necessarily bring me peace, I mean, it just leans against the wall in my store until I need it. But damn, what that mop can do after 30 minutes of deep cleaning. At this point, I can categorically say that I am a sucker for cleanliness.
And my favourite time of the day is Saturday afternoon when I finish cleaning. I make sure to use bleach so that it can leave my house smelling sterile. Mennnnn. My house is usually so clean, I routinely lie directly on the tiled floor when the heat is overwhelming.
It鈥檚 a thing of pride and peace to know that my house is clean. So yeah, my mop made it on the list馃
I put this here because most of my clothes are black. And there is a reason why this is. Every time I go shopping, the blacks usually call out to me. They look royal and casual at the same time. I love it.
All my blacks items of clothing are reliable, I can count on them anytime.
One item I am ready to let go of is the illusion of a deadline. People set deadlines for themselves, and I agree that they are often helpful. But when I allow the deadlines of others affect the way I live my life, I will always feel unaccomplished, even when I am really trying my best.
So I commit to letting go of it!
