I wrote this song in late 2010, during a brief layover in Vancouver, BC, en route to San Francisco from India.
I was feelin' pretty tender upon returning from my year abroad and more than a bit sheepish about an email I'd sent – you know the kind...the ones you deeply regret within moments of hitting 'send'.
The message was honest and vulnerable – transparent about feelings I had for someone who didn't feel the same. Though I doubted my words would be well-received, I had to confess – to release the truth of my emotions so they'd no longer weigh me down. I knew he'd never respond.
This little song was my way of soothing the embarrassment of having been right.
disclaimer: this is a rough, one-take recording with harmonies added – recorded in my bedroom with minimal equipment.
the truth is that we're all the same
with souls that need and hearts that ache
from all the truths we hide away
and all the shadows of our mistakes
little heartquakes, little heartquakes, little heartquakes
our little hearts quake, our little hearts quake
my heart did shake
haunted by your name
and the truth, it escaped
and flooded the page like monsoon rain
little heartquakes, little heartquakes, little heartquakes
my little heart quakes, my little heart quakes
oh, those lines...I can't erase
I said all I had to say
now the truth, it is contained
in your reply that never came
little heartquakes, little heartquakes, little heartquakes
my little heart quakes, my little heart quakes
the truth is that we're all ok
these little pains always fade
all we can do is love anyway
and try not to be afraid
of little heartquakes, little heartquakes, little heartquakes
our little hearts quake, our little hearts will quake
