It is the sixth game in the series, and at the same time it is the sequel to the seventh game titled "Fire Emblem" (in Japan "Rekka no Ken" or translated "Blazing Sword", this was the first game of the saga released internationally). Originally The Binding Blade was called "Fire Emblem: Maiden of the dark", it was planned to be released for the Nintendo 64 console. They showed preliminary images with SNES-like designs and 3D backgrounds. Without any warning, everything disappeared and they decided to start again presenting only for Japan on March 29, 2002 the title Fire Emblem: Fuuin no Tsurugi (The Binding Blade) for the Gameboy Advance console. Few will know the first contact of Fire Emblem outside Japan for the world, it was in the game "Super Smash Bros Melee" that Marth and Roy were as playable and unlockable characters of the famous Nintendo title. They appeared only as a promotional method for Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade, curiously the game had not yet been released for Japan at that time. Strange, isn't it?

20 years have passed since the adventures of Eliwood, Lyn and Hector, now a new threat is directed to the entire continent, and it will be the new generation of warriors who must discover the reasons behind this war and prevent the rise of this great evil that is coming.

The protagonist of this story is Roy, son of the Marquis of Pherae (Eliwood), who after his training, upon returning to the castle, discovers that they are under siege by the King of Bern, the most militarily powerful country of all that with an implacable force and cruelty has conquered two kingdoms and has declared war on the entire Lycian League, a group of small kingdoms including Pherae and Ositia. The Marquis of Pherae who should be leading his kingdom's offensive, is under a terrible illness, so he decided to send his son in his place to unite the members of the Lycian League and counterattack Bern's forces. Roy heads to the border with Bern, where he meets the Princess of Bern, Guinevere who is against the invasion and the war provoked by her brother, King Zephiel, who prophesies that it is to "free the world".

The story is simple but not very well developed like the other Fire Emblem titles, few if any of the characters participate, except for Roy who only leads the group with occasional phrases from a character mentioning the right direction to go. Although this small problem can be overshadowed by the large amount of Support Conversations to learn the stories behind our characters, a considerable amount of secret chapters and two routes and two endings that propose to finish the game a second time.

What made this game a pioneer in the genre were the mechanics that were implemented as; the Support Conversations, which consist of having conversations with certain characters during the fights, when selecting a unit and approaching another, an option called "Support" will appear, then there will be a conversation with the two characters, so you can learn more about their stories, in addition to getting bonuses and being able to improve them by leveling them up (C, B, A); and the Multiplayer, an arena where 4 players have a team of 5 units that they have in one of their saved games, the goal is that the last one with units alive will win.

The Binding Blade laid the foundations for later titles by modifying the formulas used during battles. Things are not as simple as in other titles of the saga, there are many more enemies and your characters are not as strong at the beginning of the game, so it is still fun to have to use your head to create strategies and train your warriors carefully. Going into battle against whole armies of enemies is not easy, you will have to learn to use terrain such as Fortresses or Forests to your advantage. The difficulty is the highlight of the game; the large amount of enemies, the smaller amount of strong weapons, powerful and well-armed bosses, the variety of enemy units and the giant and ingenious maps are the perfect combination to make many of the chapters a real challenge for a newcomer or a veteran in the genre. The death of a character in battle means losing him or her forever, so you will have to be careful not to lose a character in battle. In Hard Mode, the fights become much more complicated, since the enemies' stats are significantly increased, but also if we win we will get great rewards for our effort.

The maps are considerably smaller compared to the maps of the previous games of the saga on the SNES, likewise Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade is considered the Gameboy Advance game with the largest maps of all, there will be times when you will have to spend entire turns to move around the map. You can also unlock test maps that can be a good challenge for anyone and also unlock 8 secret characters like Eliwood, Hector and King Zephiel himself.

The saga has always had a good graphics, but its predecessors are composed of a better color and atmosphere. They can also be somewhat simplistic when differentiating enemy troops from yours, which is only the color. It has impeccable and colorful maps and portraits with incredible and unique animations, which make it stand out very noticeably from the rest, making it good but not special. The sound quality is a little lower than other GBA titles but still very harmonious and in the Fire Emblem style, it denotes adventure and grandeur. There are familiar tunes from its predecessors on the SNES.

Without a doubt, this is a great game of the genre. From its mechanical aspect to its humble soundtrack, make this a unique title of the saga, unknown to many players outside of Japan. Diverse and gigantic maps full of the most difficult enemies, many secrets and characters to recruit, you will have to face them with numerous strategies to achieve a single goal, to prevent Elibe from falling into the hands of King Zephiel. I recommend this game for those who already have experience with TRPGs because this title is not easy and much less if you are a novice.
