Technology has become a ubiquitous presence in our daily lives, and this is especially true when it comes to education. From kindergarten to post-grad studies, technology is being used in schools and universities to help students learn more effectively and efficiently. Before I go further to describe my technology experience in education, let me give a bit more context.
Use of Technology in Education
Digital Learning Platforms: Digital learning platforms are one of the most common ways technology is being used in education. These platforms, such as Google Classroom, Blackboard, and Canvas, allow students and teachers to share and access course materials, assignments, and assessments online. This makes it easier for students to stay organized and on top of their work, and for teachers to track student progress and provide feedback. Digital learning platforms also make it possible for students to collaborate and communicate with classmates, even if they are not in the same physical location. This can be especially beneficial for students who are learning remotely or in blended learning environments.
I even have a significant Edu-Tech product I hope to develop at some point, and trust me, this product would be a game changer in the field of education. I am highly passionate about this product and hope to get it to fruition soon.
Online Resources:Another way technology is being used in education is through the use of online resources such as videos, articles, and simulations. These resources provide students with a wealth of information and help to supplement their classroom learning. For example, YouTube has become a popular source of educational content, with channels such as Crash Course providing engaging and informative lessons on a variety of subjects. Other online resources, such as Khan Academy, Quizlet, and Coursera, offer a wide range of educational materials and courses, from primary school level to college level.
Currently, there is barely any student that doesn't Google a number of things daily in school. The good thing is that most of these online resources are rich, and available for free. Our parents and great grandparents didn't have thing opportunities, we are all grateful.
Challenges of Technology in Education
While technology can greatly enhance the education experience, it is not without its downsides. One of the main challenges is that it can be a distraction for students, with the constant notifications and access to social media making it difficult for them to stay focused. Additionally, the over-reliance on technology can lead to a lack of critical thinking skills and a lack of engagement with traditional learning methods. It is important for educators to find a balance and to incorporate technology into their teaching in ways that are beneficial for student learning, while also being mindful of the potential distractions it can pose.
My Personal Experience
As for me, I found that technology was extremely helpful during my schooling. My laptop was my perfect research companion, allowing me to access a wealth of information and resources on a variety of subjects. My smartphone and tablet were also my perfect reading companions, allowing me to read books and articles on the go. Additionally, I found that YouTube videos, especially Crash Course lessons, were extremely helpful in my studies, particularly in the areas of human anatomy and physiology. Furthermore, my proficiency in the use of technology gave me an edge over other students. I was able to complete assignments and projects faster, and I even offered services to other students for a fee.
The field of educational technology is an interesting one, and I've said earlier, I want to build on it. Any product/service built surrounding educational technology, that is good, yea, really good, will make waves and can make one a lot of money. There are some unresolved issues in education, and providing a solution through technology is an area I wish to explore soon.
Conclusion
It is clear and undeniable that technology has greatly enhanced the education experience, providing students with access to a wealth of information and resources. Digital learning platforms, online resources, and other technologies have made it easier for students to learn and for teachers to teach. However, it is important to use technology in moderation and to not rely on it too heavily, as it can also be a distraction and negatively impact critical thinking skills. As students, it is important for us to develop a balance and make the most of the technology available to us. It is up to educators and institutions to ensure that technology is being used in ways that are beneficial for student learning and to provide the necessary support to help students navigate the challenges that technology can pose. However, I remain passionate about the use of technology in education and hope to see the use of technology advance in education in my home country, Nigeria.
