While many are all caught up in forks, communities, cross posting and chicken little stuff, please forgive me if I stay the course and focus on the positivity that makes for perseverance, and productivity.

I get preachy only once a week on my blog and am inspired by wesphilbin@wesphilbin who has the poetic license to do it daily! It is a great way to keep yourself thinking constructively, sharing it on the blockchain for viral goodness, and even a neat post to do weekly if you are new and need an extra day of quality content.

I am a fan of hard work in that it makes you tough, and leads to lessons learned that enables you to work smart. Then, when you work smart, you can avoid burnout, and then work hard in fits and spurts to make greater progress. That being said, we are here to talk more about balance than hard work!

Look at that second pie. Imagine life without good food, rest, time off, and exercise. For me, I would be fat, lazier, harvesting north american diseases, fighting deteriorating energy levels and become bitter because of lack of perspective. You can't sustain productivity in that state in the medium term, or even life in the long term. So let's look at each escape from hard work and decide how it enhances productivity time.

  • Exercise - For me, this is as simple as following the impulse to get up and walk around, park farther away and walking or much more involved like getting to the BJJ academy and fighting for my life (not really ;) I can actually get work done in my field while walking but I generally don't so that I can disconnect and live in the moment. If I don't exercise, my whole being starts whining at me, then amplifies that to the point of screaming if I avoid it.

Being pissed off or dissatisfied is no way to be in the state of mind to be productive.

  • Healthy Eating - I will admit I am not the best eater but I control my portions, balance bad food with more exercise, and am eating more vegetarian than ever because of my little one. So, I could do better, and really have not fully come to grasp the real mental benefits of a really balanced diet. That being said, it is elementary that a good diet will put your temple in the state it needs to be in to think clearly and act.

  • Sleep - Well of course. A good night sleep leads to a good morning which is the start of a productive day if you are ready for it. I am of he persuasion that 8 hours of sleep all at once is not what we were made for. Eons ago, if you found a place safe enough to sleep uninterrupted for 8 hours straight, you ended up getting slow and eaten. When we evolved enough to get along with each other and team up to survive the harsh world, we would take turns sleeping and keeping watch. So, I believe we should break our sleeps up by either getting up in the middle of the night for a couple hours to read, do something productive, or be entertained. Personally, I just sleep less at night and get a glorious nap during the day!
No matter what your sleep strategy, get enough to refuel and be productive.

  • Time Off - Heading off for beers with the friends, playing some sports, or even unplugging completely for 2 weeks and spending it in another part of the world. I like to take a good mix of all of these so that I can balance easy escapes with mind altering cultural immersion in a completely alien environment. I like to travel too!

Either way, I find it easier to grind through the hard work knowing the reward is an awesome beer or even an epic vacation.

So, lets take a look at our pie, make sure there is balance, embrace the escapes, and put ourselves in the right place to maximize the fruits of our hard work.
