The sad good news we've been waiting for is finally here; The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended the eight (8) months strike here in my country Nigeria.
It's supposed to be good news but it's also sad news for so many Nigerian students for various reasons.
For me, it's a mixture of both (good news and sad news)
I am glad that the strike has finally been lifted to enable us to continue our education and stop wasting our time and years being at the same level for too long, and I am somewhat sad about the fact that I am not ready for the expenses that come with going back to school apart from the mental and academic stress.
Staying at home during these months has helped me cut down on some expenses while trying to save up for other things. And some of these have been met while others still lingering around, hopefully, someday I will get to settle all my plans and goals.
I wouldn't lie that this resumption or suspension of strike is a sudden one because, over the past few months and weeks, there were possible signs that the strike would likely be called off anytime soon so we were in our best position to start preparing for whatever was gonna happen next or whatever decision the boards were gonna make.
We all doubted at some point but either way, it's already been done, and now we gotta do nothing but get our lazy ass up, quit whining, and do what we ought to do to survive and push through this phase of our lives.
Personally, I have a lot of things to do to meet up, I have a few challenges which part has to do with finance.
I haven't been playing around for the past few months so judge with mercy if you must at all.
I have been busy doing things that I thought would bring in some income while cutting down my expenses. It's not been easy and the result has not been quite fair to be very sincere.
However, there is nothing I can do to change the whole situation than to deal with my present situation, brace up and be ready to face every freaking challenge I might meet or come across out there.
And over the past few months, I have come to realize that I can actually minimize the way I spend and prioritize my list of expenses and which is one thing I wish to apply to my finance charts now as school is resuming.
I used to spend extravagantly and I never bothered about running low on cash because I had different sources of income but the story is quite different now so I either top up the game or learn to spend less and by so doing, I will need to introduce some minimalist strategies and measures to accomplish this.
Spending less is the new normal for me. I will have to be minimal in how I spend and the things I spend on.
Making a list of things I need and those I don't. And drawing my scale of preference to meet that list.
And apart from the financial aspect, there are other practice measures to be considered as well.
Sometimes values are underrated in a way, especially in higher institutions. Well, I wouldn't wanna throw away some good values all because of pressure from school or even peers. I will do my very best to be sure I maintain some ethical values and stick to them.
As a minimalist, sometimes it is a little difficult to get along with others even your colleagues in school. And one key thing about school is that you aren't just going there to acquire knowledge and focus your 100% on books. You build friendships too and acquaintances cause who knows someday one or two of those from that category can be of immense help to you.
So yes another practice I would take on is building friendships and not being isolated. I think a few months at home has taught me a lot and opened me up to so many things.
Like it is said that no man is an island, we all need others to succeed in one way or the other. I have also made this my personal and daily task to be of help to others, especially to my colleagues in school in the little way I can when school finally resumes. Our first semester and the beginning of the second semester haven't really been great and to some extent, I regret the times I had the chance to help but just kept quiet and walked away.
I don't know why this has become a burden but I will do my very best to offer help in any possible way I can and I am not only talking about finance-related help, it can be help of any form.
And many other practices I can't state or mention here. I really would maintain these practices as school resumes and see to it that I don't run into trouble or unbearable challenges.
Happy Weekend Minimalist!
