Good day! I am Zak Ludick from Cape Town, South Africa sharing with you more and more Warhammer 40,000 Lore!
As a bit of a background check, I started playing 40k in 3rd edition and played mostly 4th and 5th edition and about one single game of 6th edition. Now, a decade or so later, I am back into the frey and am playing 9th edition. Sure 10th edition seems to be around the corner, but I am not buying the books just yet.
In the meantime, I am getting back into the lore. I know plenty old lore that many people have forgotten and having done this for a few months now I know that the old lore still stands. But the narrative of the setting has moved forward on the big calendar clock and new things are happening!
So... On Sunday I made this post:
And I began explaining to 
Space Wolves are Viking style, Space Marines. In a nutshell. They also have werewolves in their ranks. They are headstrong and when it came to other armies, inquisitors and even other Primarchs telling the Space Wolves what to do and how to do it... generally, they do not listen!
They have plenty conventions they turn upside down to suit their specific style of warfare and tradition.
So... the regular Space Marine Scout looks like this:
Humans wanting to become Space Marines need to go through extreme trials before they are fully adult. Should they survive the trials or tests as each Chapter sets forth before would-be Space Marines they would need to undergo the gene-therapy and surgeries to turn them into an Adeptus Astartes - A Space Marine.
According to the Codex Astartes, a book on tactics and doctrine set forth by the Primarch Roboute Guillaman of the Ultramarines, the carreer of a Space Marines goes as follows:
You first become a Space Marines Scout. You might spend some time as a Close Combat fighter, an infiltrator, a sniper and as an outrider on a bike.
Then you join the Devastator Company and get your Power Armor, and protect the guys with the Heavy Weapons. Perhaps you will be given a heavy weapon to fire.
After this you will be placed into the Assault Company and you will fight either with a Jump Pack or from a transport and go into close combat.
And THEN you will find your way into the Tactical Squad units. These are versatile and competent warriors. After this, these warriors may be promoted into more Veteran roles.
Thus Space Marines Scouts are the first step in a long carreer for a Space Marine.
Space Wolves recruit their neophytes from the Death World of Fenris. By the time you are selected you have already fought in wars, raids and battled monsters.
You get selected after a battle whether or not you have been killed in combat. The Space Wolves heal those men and start training them. They begin gene therapy and undergo more trials. Eventually this culminates in drinking from the Cup of the Wulfen.
Should they survive this, they get their Power Armor and join a Blood Claw Pack of up to 15 Space Wolves! After lots of fighting and experience, the Wolf Guard will then promote the Blood Claw pack to become Grey Hunters.
By this time there are only around 10 or so Space Wolves.
From this point onwards, as a pack gets older the Wolves might become Long Fangs and use the Heavy Weapons of the Chapter. Or if you were a superb warrior, you might be selected by the Wolf Lord of your Great Company to become a Wolf Guard.
However, there are those Space Wolves who do not enojoy the close-knit boisterousness of the pack. They prefer the outdoors and operating alone or in much smaller packs.
These might come out of the Blood Claws OR Grey Hunters. Taciturn and unforgiving Space Wolves, they forego the protection of Power Armor to take on Scout Armor and become veteran infiltrators.
These Scouts have the ability to stay behind enemy lines for weeks, months or years at a time and are generally under the direct command of the Great Wolf Logan Grimnar himself!
