OK. If you want to paint behind the gun, you have to paint sub-assembly. This means not gluing it all together. Some of the items must be loose so you can paint all details.

As for basing. If you scratch a model with your fingernail on a flat surface and the paint easily comes off and chips off.. it probably does not have a bonding layer.
