"I'm so happy you are so strong."She smiled again.I was not sure the little dimple that emerged on one of her cheeks when she smiled or tried to smile was not propelledby the pain that must have now started welling up in her system.
That she now responded to my nervous efforts to cheer her up with jus smiles, inspite of the grave circumstances, dispirited me.Jus about twenty minutes ago,she chatted away so noisily that i wondered if she understood the full weight of what had happened. She had,in more than hundred invectives discharged almost at the same pace a machine gun releases its bullets, berated and rebuked the driver for driving a vehicle that was nothing better than a death trap; for commandeering all the money made from the bus and keeping none for the maintenanceof the vehicle; for useing her as a deliberate obstruction for brakeless vehicle. She had even aimed what looked like a slap at the bus driver, to drive home her point of sheepish senselessness, which had now led to the critical endangerment of the life of others. I was taken back by her effrontery, and could not help but genuinely admire her courage.
The driver had said nothing; but the look on his face said everything. He kept staring in one direction - the decimated girl's face- with eyes so watery , they looked like they had been taken from an octopus. The driver made no attempt whatsoever to wipe away the tears streaming dawn his face, and made no attempt to avoid the girl's slap, which though did not reach it's destination, for the girl could not summon required leverage and fire power. The doctors and i tried to calm her dawn, and persuade her that her tirades were unimportant for now.
"I assured you, you will never get away with tis," she promised the driver finally and everyone around knew she ment it. The driver kept staring, in one direction, as if he saw something there that nobody else saw. He was still peering into the space when the doctor ask everyone eles out. He was in the state when a group of three policemen arrived and took him away after consultations with me, the Dean of students' Affairs, and the and the medical Director of the hospital.
