The Simple Analogy
Before we look at the definitions, think of it like this:

Earthing is connecting the metal parts of an electrical appliance (parts that do not normally carry electricity) straight into the literal earth using a copper wire and an earth rod.
Why we need it?
Imagine you are using a washing machine, a fridge, or an electric iron, and a loose wire inside touches the metal body. If there is no earthing, the whole metal body becomes "live." The moment you touch it, electricity rushes through your body to the ground, and you get shocked.
How earthing saves you
With proper earthing, that stray electricity takes the easiest path, down the green or yellow copper wire and deep into the soil. Because electricity loves the easiest path, it bypasses your body completely, trips the circuit breaker or blows the fuse, and keeps you safe.

Grounding is connecting the actual working parts of an electrical circuit—like the neutral wire of a transformer, generator, or inverter—to the earth to give the system a stable reference point.
Why we need it
Electricity needs a reference point to stay stable. If lightning strikes a power line or a sudden surge of high voltage hits your solar inverter, the system can go crazy and fry all your electronic devices.
How grounding helps: Grounding acts like an anchor or a shock absorber. It gives sudden, massive power surges a safe place to dump excess energy, preventing your home appliances, television, and inverters from blowing up.
