Humans are now burning more than 1 million tons of coal, oil, and natural gas every hour. Whether the concern is global warming or local air quality or energy security, this “burn rate” is unsustainable. Clean energy technologies could create millions of jobs, reduce dependence on foreign oil, and eliminate enough heat-trapping emissions to help meet climate stabilization goals. Putting this into perspective, it invariably means the technology’s cost/benefit proposition is tied to its functioning as a quick temporary green fix for the prevailing energy sources while the world transitions to other sustainable and longer lasting means of energy generation such as nuclear energy. Additionally, zero carbon natural gas would also support more fracking because it would undercut the argument that fracking should be banned because it leads to greater CO2 emissions. Similarly, although there doesn't appear to be interest in building more natural gas power plants, the use of zero carbon natural gas would justify creating more pipelines and natural gas power plants.
Zero carbon natural energy poses to have a promising future, but if energy production has taught us anything, it is that it will not be the end all, be all to our energy problem. Instead, it is a welcomed addition to the technologies being conjured to solve the energy problem. The important component of the global drive to reduce emissions is alternative sources of liquid and gaseous fuels. Many methods are being investigated and progress is rapidly approaching. Thre are even some who believe we will be able to effectively replace the thermal fossil generation by 2050.
Energy companies now have the decision to adapt to the new standard and transform themselves as the low-carbon energy companies of the future or not adapt and continue as they are. These companies are faced with the challenge of how to secure long-term prosperity of their businesses while doing their part to provide climate-safe methods of energy production.
