The news about the Olympics for our dear country, Nigeria, has gone from one sad story to another. However, I heard recently that there have been some worthy stories to write about.
But, like a true Nigerian, we'll start from the bad news.
I read somewhere that when a country crumbles internally, there can be no other option but to crumble internationally. I guess that's exactly what our dear country is experiencing. An internal and external crumble.
Like all public disgraces, the Minister of Sports came through to say that Nigeria's current failure at the Olympics was caused by the fact that a virgin team was sent. According to him, people only start winning medals in the Olympics in their second or third appearance. As always, we know that's total bull.
It was recorded a few days into the Olympics that there were 2 protests held by Team Nigeria for 2 different reasons.
The first I read about took place after Samsung donated mobile phones to athletes and requested that all the athletes appear individually to collect their phones at a certain office.
While other countries acted accordingly, a Nigerian official collected all the phones meant for the Nigerian Team and refused to release them to the athletes. A total disappointment.
The next protest was due to the disqualification of 10 out of the 24 athletes sent to Tokyo. Unfortunately, these disqualifications were not uncalled for. An athlete with high expectations had to be disqualified due to an abuse of narcotics. Such a shame.
With the bad news in check, Blessing Oborududu made it to the semi-finals and has to be one of Nigeria's sure bets at a medal in the wrestling category.
Ese Brume recently won a silver medal in the long jump games, breaking a bunch of records and giving us hope of not being a total disaster.
We're learning to take the bad with the good in this country so right now we can only be grateful for these achievements. At least our presence there has not been a total disaster.
