No apto para todos by JP Venom, indeed, is not suitable for everyone, but perhaps this responds to its own context, because from the beginning we can notice the strong influences of American trap and hip-hop scenes more oriented towards the style of Playboi Carti, Travis Scott, Trippie Redd, this type of rap that emerged beyond 2016 and that with the trap scene and its derivatives has managed to stay with what we understand today as hip-hop.
This album comes in a changing context for the island, where "reparto" seems to be finally floating internationally and Detroit rap is taking over the Cuban streets, mixing it with this last mentioned genre.
Now, why does JP want to break with everything he had done before? Although he was the main driver of the drill scene on the island, something was changing. That sound quickly burned out in the country, because he took it to a very high point and it began to be overexploited. Now, although the scene was changing, he had to change.
That is why this album is groundbreaking. Already from the teasers like "Mito" or "Verde", it was clear that JP was exploring other lines, that he was looking for other ways of making music. Perhaps "Verde" is the one that most aligned with what he did before, but when it comes to fronting, because his sound had been changing, and what can I say about "Mito", an absolute jewel.
But this album doesn't stop there; this album explodes, dares to experiment, the sonic landscapes go completely beyond what was being done in Cuba. Perhaps from the track "Yessir" with Linye we can appreciate that this will not stay simply as the name of the album, but will traverse many spheres. Each track has a distinct but cohesive sonority, managing to wrap the record in an atmosphere that is at times dark and full of energy.
From my first listen, I realized that this was an album thought for live performances, for big concerts, to play and face the audience. Perhaps my favorite track, "Happy Day", explodes what JP had been doing and takes it to a greater scale. It might not be the most popular one that ends up being part of the album, but for me, this is the greatest conclusion of this record, a track designed to be chanted by many people and that manages to bring out the best of JP's style.
This summation of tracks concludes or perhaps highlights the career JP had been having up to now, mixing the energy he carried in drill, the dance he tried to include in a short stage of his career, and including experimentation with these sounds. His usual producer on most of the tracks, very interesting collaborations that perhaps listening to them and being surprised by them is best, but without exploiting the big names of the Cuban scene—that is, looking for new blood, looking for lesser-heard collaborations that fit to perfection with these genres that the album undertakes.
For all this, for me this album No apto para todos ends up being a contradiction, because it actually is suitable for everyone. If Cuban music, and especially the Cuban genre, was dozing off in overly comfortable formulas, JP comes to break through and with this album, perhaps, open new tastes to new genres.
