We all carry a voice within us that isn't always kind. Mine has a name, even though I never consciously christened it; it simply appeared one day and took up residence in the deepest corner of my thoughts. Yes, I have an inner critic. It is that invisible presence that has accompanied me for as long as I can remember, whispering judgments before I can even formulate an idea of my own.

Its favorite phrase is devastatingly simple: "You are not enough." No matter the context, it always finds a way to fit those three words into any situation. Before an interview, after a conversation, while looking in the mirror, or when publishing something I’ve written. "You are not enough" is its mantra, its banner, its weapon of choice.

It speaks loudest when I am alone. In the silence of the night, when no one else can contradict it, its voice becomes deafening. It also shouts when comparing me to others: when I see someone succeed where I failed, or when someone seems to have the life I wish for. And it speaks with particular ferocity right before important moments, as if its mission were to sabotage me before I even try.

If my inner critic were a person, it would be someone impeccably dressed, always holding a notebook and taking notes on every mistake. It would have a smile that never reached its eyes and an extraordinary ability to recall every failure in minute detail. That person would be the one at family gatherings who says, "I'm only telling you this for your own good," right before destroying you with a seemingly innocent remark. They would never raise their voice, yet their tone would be sharp enough to draw blood.

Their personality is that of a relentless perfectionist. They know no rest, accept no excuses, and celebrate no achievements. They are inflexible, meticulous, and absolutely convinced they are right. Yet, paradoxically, they are also a coward: hiding behind criticism to avoid facing their own fears. Because, deep down, my inner critic is nothing more than a projection of my deepest insecurities—a guardian that learned to protect me in the wrong way.

Recognizing this has been the first step toward taming it. It is not about silencing it completely, but rather understanding that its voice is not the only truth. Today, when it says, "You aren't enough," I try to answer gently: "You might be right, but I’m going to try anyway." And in that small act of rebellion, I find freedom.
