Sorry but your understanding of history is a bit lacking.
The King of France did not call "The National Assembly." The King of France called a bizarre structure called "The Estates General."
The Estates General was split into three estates. The estates were The Clergy, the Nobility and the Commoners.
This was a class structure and not a left/right split.
The third estate was controlled by a radical group called Jacobins. The Jacobins were deeply influenced by the radical ideas coming from a mysterious kingdom called Prussia.
Hmmm, who were the Prussians? Who funded the Prussians? What the blazes were the Prussians and Jacobins doing?
The King of France thought the third estate was unruly. The third estate met on a Tennis Court and declared themselves the National Assembly.
The national assembly was controlled by the Jacobins. There was not a classic left/right split here either.
The National Assembly eventually executed the king. The Jacobins decided to cement their power by committing an atrocity called "The Reign of Terror" and began slaughtering dissenters. They tried creating a new state religion.
Finally the members of the National Assembly turned on each other and killed their leadership.
But wait!!!!
The reign of the Jacobins did not end.
A valiant young Jacobin named Napoleon Bonaparte jumped forward with all of the zeal of a radical and declared himself emperor.
Georg Hegel, one of the most influential leaders of the left, saw Napoleon on a horse and was awe struck.
The history of progressivism is really, really, really, really bizarre.
In 1190 the pope created a religious order called the Teutonic Knights to defend pilgrims to the holy lands. Teutonic knights was an order of warrior monks and they fought with religious zeal.
As a side project, the Teutonic Knights conquered lands from Berlin to Ukraine.
The Teutonic Knights sided with Martin Luther during the Protestant Reformation and established the Kingdom of Prussia with its capital in Konigsburg.
Prussia was a country of zealots.
Now for next twist.
England adopted Protestantism in the 16th century as well. England suffered through a series of brutal civil wars. These wars included a religious element. Several kings converted to Catholicism.
The English Parliament feared that future kings might convert.
The Act of Settlement of 1701 stipulated that the King must be raised protestant.
In 1714 the crown passed over the heads of the close relatives of Queen Anne and landed on the head of George Augustus of Hanover .... which is in modern day German.
King George I and II were German. They spoke broken English at best.
King George was friends and close allies with King Frederick of Prussia.
King George funneled vast amounts of wealth into the German University system. Notably, they created the University of Göttingen. The Hanoverian Kings also created Kings College in New York (aka Columbia) and Kings College London which is home to the London School of Economics.
The Kings of England poured vasts amounts of money into the German University system with the goal of creating an exciting new think.
The first philosopher in this tradition was a man named Christian Wolff. Wolff was intrigued by the monism of Parmenides.
Kant, who famously never stepped a foot outside the capital city of Konnigsburg.
Question, why do people adore Kant?
Answer. People adore Kant because he was a royalist philosopher creating a radical new philosophy in the land of the Teutonic Knights.
King Frederick I hired Voltaire to teach his son.
King Frederick II wrote a book called "Anti-Machiavellian" which tried to preserve the core tenets of Machiavelli while distancing Machiavelli from the negative images of Machiavelli.
King George and King Frederick were close allies.
Prussia was a land of zealots. One of their wars expanded into a global conflict known in Europe as the Seven Years War. It was known in the United States as the French and Indian War.
Prussia was a land of zeolots that loved war.
One day King Frederick II watched his army fight a battle. King Frederick saw his soldiers milling about.
King Frederick decided that he could turn his people into a disciplined fighting force by forcing the children in the kingdom through a system of compulsory education.
The education system started with Kindergarten the pushed the students through a graduated scale of grades. The system included a post secondary education with defined grades called Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior. Graduate schools could give Master and PhD degrees.
Isn't that special?
So, the K-12 system of education system was designed to turn students into uniform little soldiers to fight for the states.
The great new ideology of the Prussians was largely a twist on The Divine Right of Kings. But instead of king, they preferred abstract ideas like The State or The World Spirit.
Back in England things went haywire. Parliament had two houses. The House of Lords was composed of entitled landowners. The House of Commons was split into the Whigs and the Tories. Most members of Parliamen t were Whigs who favored the supremacy of the Legislature. The Tories supported the supremacy of the King.
The US founders were primarily Whigs.
King George III receive the progressive education coming from Prussia. He wanted to restore the supremacy of the King.
King George III expected the American Colonies to pay their share of the wars started by King Frederick.
The US Founders balked. As Whigs they preferred the supremacy of the legislature and wanted a Republic.
You can actually call the split between Whigs and Tories a left/right split.
King George III did not die after the US revolution.
King George III dreamt of a counter revolution that would restore the monarchy.
Did I mention that King George funded the German University system.
There is a large slew of philosopher that worked on the question of creating a counter revolution that would restore the monarchy.
This band includes famous names like Hegel, Schopenhauer, Voltaire, Feuerbach and hundreds more.
The Jacobins learned the exciting new philosophies.
This is where we see the invention of the left-wing ideologies that teachers fawn over in the Prussian education system.
Left-wing ideologies were not created by people wanting liberty. They were created by people dreaming of a counter revolution that would restore the flappin' monarchy.
This is why left-wing governments tend toward totalitarianism because the stinking system of thought was born by zealots in the Teutonic tradition.
The party system in the US is not a carbon copy of the parties in England.
The Democratic Party was formed by a populist named Andrew Jackson. Jackson and the Democrats sought to conserve a peculiar institution called slavery.
Opponents to Jackson formed a new Whig Party. The Whig Party was soft on slavery.
Fremont and Lincoln formed the Republican Party from a coalition of the Whigs and Abolitionists. The Democrats rebelled and formed the Confederacy.
Lincoln did something really strange. He appointed a Democrat named Andrew Johnson as his vice-president.
After Lincoln's assassination, Andrew Johnson (D) scuttled plans to reconstruct the south leading to a period of Jim Crow rule in the south.
In the 1960s, pundits took to calling the Republican Party "Conservatives."
Yeah, a large number of Dixiecrats joined the GOP. Since the United States doesn't have a king, the left/right split in the US has never had anything to do with Republicans being on the side of the King and the Democrats being on the side of the people.
Unfortunately, since we based our education system on the Prussian Model, we are all receiving a radical education which misses the subtleties of history.
