Marxists want Marxist states. These Marxist states have been far more repressive than Christian states. The Black Book of Communism outlines many of the atrocities committed in the name of leftist ideology.
As for Christianity: Many of our ideas about separation of church and state come from the Christian tradition.
Christ did not seek political power. Why would the God of Creation need political power?
The Christian tradition drew a sharp distinction between the secular and sacred. This tradition would hold that government is the creation of man. Christians were more concerned with the creation of God than the creation of man.
When Christians rose to power in the Roman world, Christians tried to maintain that separation.
Political leaders want power and political leaders routinely blurred the distinction but the separation of the secular and sacred in a fundamental principle.
BTW: I personally have problems with conservatives want to combine church and state. These conservatives don't understand the Christian tradition.
