You might be able to find services that will handle your domain registries for less. Some web hosts offer decent prices on domain registrations to lure in developers.

There are several auction houses for domain names. Godaddy has a popular auction site. I seem to remember other locations as well.

It is always better to auction off your old domain names than to simply let them expire. Domains that expire are usually bought up by domain squatters who then resell the domain.

BTW: There are a few sites like Flippa which trade in functioning domains. Some people make money by building domains and selling them.
