Political powers invest a great deal of effort into controlling journalists. In the west, the rulers use intense social pressure to control journalists. NOTE: In a multi-party system, the different factions will sometimes promote outcast journalists when they find it politically expedient; however, the factions do a pretty good job controlling journalists. Those that challenge their authority are usually cancelled.
Murder is the ultimate form of cancellation. It is common in countries seeking to establish single party rule.
This list of Journalists killed in Mexico show that the problem is not unique to Ukraine. We don't hear as much about these journalists as their deaths do not fit a popular narrative.
I suspect that most journalists who do a risk analysis of reporting in places like Mexico realize that the risk of reporting against the narrative are far greater than the cost of reporting the narrative and stick with the narrative.
Sadly, Journalists are often killed in Nigeria, The Philippines, Pakistan and India. This report claims that there has been 2,568 journalists killed.
What about all the people, like bloggers, killed for expressing opinions?
Anyway, the cancellation of journalists is found throughout the world. It is simply being reported in Ukraine at the moment. Killing is the ultimate form of cancellation.
